British PM Threatens to Restrict Social Media in Riot’s Aftermath

HeadlineAug 12, 2011

British Prime Minister David Cameron has addressed a special session of Parliament on the riots that swept through a number of British cities and left at least four people dead. Cameron took aim at critics who have pointed to poverty and racism as major factors behind the unrest. Cameron instead said the problem centers around street gangs, adding the problem is one of “culture,” not “poverty.” In a move that has drawn scrutiny from civil liberties advocates, Cameron also announced the British government will consider imposing curfews and restricting social media websites to prevent future unrest.

British Prime Minister David Cameron: “Everyone watching these horrific actions will be struck by how they were organized via social media. Free flow of information can be used for good, but it can also be used for ill. So we are working with the police, the intelligence services and industry to look at whether it would be right to stop people communicating via these websites and services, when we know they are plotting violence, disorder and criminality.”
