Senate lawmakers have rejected a measure by Republican Senator Chuck Grassley to severely delay a path to citizenship for millions of undocumented residents as part of the landmark immigration reform bill. The Grassley amendment would have required officials to maintain “effective control” of the entire U.S.-Mexico border for six months before immigrants could apply for legal status.
