Hi there,

There has never been a more urgent time for courageous, daily, independent news. Democracy Now!’s independent reporting is more important than ever, when only a galvanized, engaged public, supported by resilient, pro-democracy grassroots movements, can prevent authoritarianism from triumphing. Thanks to a group of generous donors, all donations made today will be TRIPLED, which means your $15 gift is worth $45. With your contribution, we can continue to go to where the silence is, to bring you the voices of the silenced majority – those calling for peace in a time of war, demanding action on the climate catastrophe and advocating for racial and economic justice. Every dollar makes a difference. Thank you so much!

Russian Judge Sentences Opposition Leader Alexei Navalny to 9 Additional Years

HeadlineMar 22, 2022

A Russian judge has declared opposition leader Alexei Navalny guilty of fraud and contempt of court and sentenced him to nine additional years in prison in a trial denounced by human rights groups as a politically motivated sham. Navalny is Vladimir Putin’s best-known domestic critic. He has been jailed since last year at a penal colony east of Moscow, after he survived a nerve agent attack in 2020. The Kremlin denied involvement in the assassination attempt. Navalny’s spokesperson said the guilty verdict was expected.

Kira Yarmysh: “This is not a surprise that Putin would like to keep Alexei in prison for as long as he is in power. We are completely sure that this is his direct order to imprison Alexei.”
