COVID-19 has reached record levels in the United Kingdom as the Omicron variant BA.2 rapidly spreads. Government data show nearly 5 million people in the U.K. had coronavirus last week — higher than any previous time during the pandemic. This comes as China reported 13,000 new cases on Sunday — the country’s highest one-day total since the pandemic’s first peak over two years ago. About 70% of the cases were in Shanghai, where most of the city’s 25 million people remain under lockdown.
