Democrats Call Social Security Privatization “Immoral”

HeadlineFeb 04, 2005

On the social security front, 43 of the 44 Democratic Senators signed a letter Thursday to President Bush charging that his plan to privatize social security was “immoral, unacceptable, and unsustainable.” Independent Senator Jim Jeffords of Vermont also signed the letter. The Senators quoted from the Bible to make their case. The letter read, “We are spending enough of our kids’ money. Our country needs to get back to following the teachings of Romans 13:8, which says we should 'let no debt remain outstanding.' ”
