Hi there,

The job of a journalist is to go to where the silence is — especially when those in power seek to silence voices that question or challenge power. That is what we do at Democracy Now! day in and day out, and we're able to do it because of financial support from people like you — people who trust and depend on our independent reporting. If you believe that freedom of speech and freedom of the press are essential to the functioning of a democratic society, please donate today. Every dollar makes a difference. Thank you so much.

UNICEF: Nearly One-Third of Lebanese Victims Are Children

HeadlineJul 28, 2006

Children continue to pay a heavy price in the attack on Lebanon, forced to take refuge in schools, mosques and shelters around the country.

  • UNICEF Directory for Emergency Programs Daniel Toole: “We estimate that at least thirty percent of the casualties of those dead, are children. That is a very high level. We estimate that probably 45 percent of the displaced are children because there are so many people on the move. That’s a very very high number and it means that we have much higher rates of dependency of assistance in this beginning period.”
