Hi there,

In this chaotic news cycle it may be tempting to tune out, but we hope you won’t—only an informed and engaged public can defend democracy. In these times of deep political polarization we need news that goes beyond play-by-play headlines, news that goes to the heart of each story by asking people to tell their own stories of abuses of power and injustice in their own words. If our journalism is important to you, please donate today. Every dollar makes a difference. Thank you so much.

A Learning and Teaching Tool for Educators

Teach Democracy Now!April 16, 2007

“I use Democracy Now! first and foremost as a learning tool for myself. I was a student-teacher last year for U.S. History and I often used the Democracynow.org search engine for the different subjects I was going to teach. There were so many hits on each subject and even just listening to Democracy Now! daily, informs me of the anniversaries of so many key U.S. historical events. I also used Democracy Now! coverage of Video News Releases by the government to teach students historical thinking; that is, the importance of the source when doing anything as common as watching the daily news. Students reacted well to the video news release of the Iraqis praising Bush and America and then learning that this was pre-packaged and produced by the State Department. I intend to use Democracy Now! as a teaching tool as I begin teaching the “Rise of Democratic Ideas” to Sophomores. I love the availability of the show from full-text transcriptions to mp3s to podcasts.”
