The award cites leaders Patrisse Cullors, Alicia Garza and Opal Tometi, who began organizing under the hashtag #BlackLivesMatter campaign in 2013, when white neighborhood watch vigilante George Zimmerman was acquitted in Florida of murdering unarmed African-American teenager Trayvon Martin. Past winners of the Sydney Peace Foundation prize include former Irish President Mary Robinson, South Africa’s Desmond Tutu and renowned activist Noam Chomsky.
