Hi there,

The job of a journalist is to go to where the silence is — especially when those in power seek to silence voices that question or challenge power. That is what we do at Democracy Now! day in and day out, and we're able to do it because of financial support from people like you — people who trust and depend on our independent reporting. If you believe that freedom of speech and freedom of the press are essential to the functioning of a democratic society, please donate today. Every dollar makes a difference. Thank you so much.

MOVE 9 Member Delbert Orr Africa Released from Prison

HeadlineJan 21, 2020

MOVE 9 member Delbert Orr Africa, known as Del Africa, was released from a Pennsylvania prison Saturday, after 42 years behind bars. Del Africa was arrested with eight others following a 1978 police raid on the house of MOVE, a radical, anti-police-brutality and largely African-American organization. The members were convicted in the killing of Philadelphia police officer James Ramp. One member of the MOVE 9, Chuck Africa, still remains in prison. Six others others have been released, and two members died behind bars.
