Italian PM Conte Resigns as Political Crisis Deepens Amid Coronavirus Wave

HeadlineJan 27, 2021

A political crisis in Italy is deepening after Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte resigned Tuesday following weeks of government turmoil. The resignation followed a dispute among the governing coalition over Conte’s handling of the pandemic and over EU coronavirus recovery funds. Conte is expected to try to remain as leader by forming a new coalition, but if those efforts fail, Italy could be headed toward snap elections amid a devastating second wave of the pandemic.
