Hi there,

In this chaotic news cycle it may be tempting to tune out, but we hope you won’t—only an informed and engaged public can defend democracy. In these times of deep political polarization we need news that goes beyond play-by-play headlines, news that goes to the heart of each story by asking people to tell their own stories of abuses of power and injustice in their own words. If our journalism is important to you, please donate today. Every dollar makes a difference. Thank you so much.

Florida Senate Advances Bill to Ban Nearly All Abortions After 15 Weeks

HeadlineFeb 22, 2022

In Florida, a state Senate committee has advanced a Republican-led bill that would ban almost all abortions after 15 weeks of pregnancy. The legislation now heads to the full state Senate for a vote. The bill makes no exceptions for pregnancies that result from rape or incest, and would require two physicians to certify an abortion is necessary to save the pregnant person’s life. Florida’s Republican Governor Ron DeSantis has called the bill “reasonable” and “supportive of protecting life.” He’s expected to sign the legislation if it reaches his desk.
