Hi there,

In this chaotic news cycle it may be tempting to tune out, but we hope you won’t—only an informed and engaged public can defend democracy. In these times of deep political polarization we need news that goes beyond play-by-play headlines, news that goes to the heart of each story by asking people to tell their own stories of abuses of power and injustice in their own words. If our journalism is important to you, please donate today. Every dollar makes a difference. Thank you so much.

Carl Kabat, Catholic Priest & Anti-Nuclear Activist, Dies at 88

HeadlineAug 22, 2022

The longtime anti-nuclear activist and Catholic priest Carl Kabat has died at the age of 88. In 1980, he took part in the first Plowshares action when he, along with Dan and Phil Berrigan and others, broke into a General Electric missile plant in King of Prussia, Pennsylvania. They hammered on missile nose cones, damaging them beyond repair, and poured their blood on the damaged parts. Kabat would go on to spend over 17 years in prison for his anti-nuclear activism.
