The 2024 Nobel Peace Prize has been awarded to the Japanese group Nihon Hidankyo, a grassroots organization of atomic bomb survivors from Hiroshima and Nagasaki. The anti-nuclear activists, known as hibakusha, are being recognized for their “efforts to achieve a world free of nuclear weapons and for demonstrating through witness testimony that nuclear weapons must never be used again.” After the prize was announced, the co-chair of Nihon Hidankyo, Toshiyuki Mimaki, spoke to reporters in Tokyo and said, “In Gaza, bleeding children are being held [by their parents].
