In September 2017, Hurricane Maria struck Puerto Rico as a major Category 4 storm—the most powerful hurricane to make landfall there since 1928. Maria also lashed the U.S. Virgin Islands and devastated the island of Dominica, causing what the country’s prime minister called “mind-boggling” devastation.
