And in New York City, author and editor Jean Stein has died, after she took her own life on Sunday. She was 83 years old. The former editor of The Paris Review, Stein was well known for writing best-selling oral histories—her latest, “West of Eden: An American Place,” about MCA, the Music Corporation of America, which is now NBCUniversal. MCA was founded by her father, Jules Stein. Stein is survived by her daughters, Katrina vanden Heuvel, publisher of The Nation, and actress Wendy vanden Heuvel.
