Hi there,

This month, Democracy Now! marks 29 years of fearless independent journalism. Presidents have come, gone and come back again, but Democracy Now! remains, playing the same critical role in our democracy: shining a spotlight on corporate and government abuses of power and raising up the voices of scholars, advocates, scientists, activists, artists and ordinary people working for a more peaceful and just world. If our journalism is important to you, please donate today in honor of our 29th anniversary. Every dollar makes a difference. Thank you so much.

Community Groups Blast Eric Adams’s Plans for NYC’s Version of Cop City

HeadlineJun 04, 2024

Here in New York City, community organizers are condemning plans to build a new police training facility in Queens that will cost some $225 million. New York City Mayor Eric Adams made the announcement Friday. Construction for the training center is expected to begin in 2026, with plans for it to be operational in 2030. Critics have compared the so-called Public Safety Academy to Atlanta’s widely contested Cop City, a massive $90 million police training complex being built in the Weelaunee Forest.
