Hi there,

The job of a journalist is to go to where the silence is — especially when those in power seek to silence voices that question or challenge power. That is what we do at Democracy Now! day in and day out, and we're able to do it because of financial support from people like you — people who trust and depend on our independent reporting. If you believe that freedom of speech and freedom of the press are essential to the functioning of a democratic society, please donate today. Every dollar makes a difference. Thank you so much.

George W. Heckled On Oprah

George W. Bush was on Oprah yesterday, one week and a day after Al Gore made an appearance, in the presidential candidates’ race for women voters. And there was a little surprise for both the presidential candidate and Oprah.

Tape:

  • Excerpt from Oprah

We could barely make out what the heckler’s question to Bush was about. Something about bombing and Iraq. We decided to find out just what the heckler had to say. We thought–who would have something to say about bombing in Iraq? Voices In the Wilderness. That’s the group that campaigns to end the economic sanctions and the continued bombings against Iraq. We called their office to ask if they knew who had asked the question. Danny Muller answered our call. He had just returned from the Oprah studio where he was kicked out for his interruption.

Guest:

  • Danny Muller, works for Voices In The Wilderness the group that campaigns to end the economic sanctions against Iraq, and recently traveled on a delegation to Iraq. Call Voices In the Wilderness: 773.784.8065.

This moment reminds me of two years ago, Feb. 18, 1998, a live broadcast on CNN of a Town Hall Meeting where a substitute public school teacher spoke out. Clinton’s foreign policy team was trying to sell another series of bombings of Iraq to the American people. Madeleine Albright was speaking at the meeting at Ohio State University when the school teacher from Columbus Ohio, John Strange, stood up to ask her a question.
