Hi there,

It is the job of the press to cover power, not cover for power—to hold those in power accountable by documenting what's happening on the ground and amplifying voices at the grassroots. In this critical moment, as attacks on the media escalate, we must continue to cover crackdowns on dissent, immigrants, the LGBTQ+ community, public health and academic freedom. Thanks to a group of generous donors, all donations made today will be DOUBLED, which means your $15 gift is worth $30. If our journalism is important to you, please donate today. Every dollar makes a difference. Thank you so much.

U.N. Criticizes U.S. Treatment of Antiwar Protesters

HeadlineApr 05, 2004

The United Nations Commission on Human Rights has issued a report criticizing the New York and Oakland police for abusing the human rights of antiwar protesters last year. This marks the first time in at least five years that the U.S. was cited in the annual human rights report. Other nations criticized include Indonesia, Burundi, China, Pakistan and Egypt.

Oakland police shot wooden plugs and beanbags at antiwar demonstrators during a protest last year along the city’s docks. During the Feb. 15 antiwar protests of last year, the New York police charged into protesters with horses, beat protesters with batons and indiscriminately fired pepper spray.
