Hi there,

The job of a journalist is to go to where the silence is — especially when those in power seek to silence voices that question or challenge power. That is what we do at Democracy Now! day in and day out, and we're able to do it because of financial support from people like you — people who trust and depend on our independent reporting. If you believe that freedom of speech and freedom of the press are essential to the functioning of a democratic society, please donate today. Every dollar makes a difference. Thank you so much.

El-Masri Inquiry Hears Evidence Germany Knew of Kidnapping

HeadlineJun 23, 2006

In Germany Thursday, a parliamentary inquiry heard new evidence the government failed to take action upon hearing Khalid el-Masri had been kidnapped and handed to the CIA. El-Masri is the German citizen who was kidnapped and held in a secret prison in Afghanistan, where he says was repeatedly beaten and drugged. He was eventually released after his captors realized they had the wrong man.

  • Wolfgang Neskovic of Germany’s Left Party: “Today’s examination was another piece in the puzzle that the German government’s claim it had only heard of el-Masri’s abduction after he was freed is wrong.”
