Hi there,

Today is the first of two Public Media Giving Days, a time to celebrate what public and independent media gives to you by giving back. If you think Democracy Now!’s reporting is a critical line of defense against war, climate catastrophe and authoritarianism, please make your donation of $10 or more right now. In honor of Public Media Giving Days, a generous donor will TRIPLE your donation, which means it’ll go 3x as far to support our independent journalism. Democracy Now! is funded by you, and that’s why we’re counting on your donation to keep us going strong. Please give today. Every dollar makes a difference—in fact, gets tripled! Thank you so much.

Assad Blasts US, Israel in First Speech Since Lebanon War

HeadlineAug 16, 2006

In Syria, President Bashar Al Assad discussed the Lebanon war Tuesday in his first major speech since the conflict began. Assad said Israel and the US are to blame for stalling peace in the region and said Hezbollah has won a major victory.

  • Syrian President Bashar Al-Assad: “The kidnapping soldiers were a mere excuse for the world to begin this aggression, but there result was more defeat for Israel, its allies and its masters and more entrenchment of the nationalist forces that support the resistance and the principle of resistance taking root in the hearts and minds of hundred of millions of people in the Arab and Muslim world.”
