Hi there,

The job of a journalist is to go to where the silence is — especially when those in power seek to silence voices that question or challenge power. That is what we do at Democracy Now! day in and day out, and we're able to do it because of financial support from people like you — people who trust and depend on our independent reporting. If you believe that freedom of speech and freedom of the press are essential to the functioning of a democratic society, please donate today. Every dollar makes a difference. Thank you so much.

Indiana Lawmakers Pass Anti-Union Bill

HeadlineJan 26, 2012

Indiana’s Republican-controlled statehouse has approved a measure that would prohibit private sector workplaces from requiring workers to pay dues or other fees to join a union. The so-called “right to work” bill was passed over the opposition of Democratic lawmakers who had boycotted the State Assembly in a bid to deny Republicans quorum. Once enacted, Indiana will be the 23rd state to adopt a “right to work” law. Opponents call the measure an attack on organized labor that will result in lower wages and diminished collective bargaining rights.
