Hi there,

In the six months since President Trump’s inauguration, we have seen unprecedented attacks on the press. Instead of pushing back, corporate owners of commercial networks are caving in. Because we do not accept any corporate or government funding, we rely on audience members like you to sustain our work. I hope you will donate today to support our independent journalism. Thanks to a group of generous donors, all donations today will be TRIPLED, which means your $15 gift is worth $45. If you believe that freedom of speech and freedom of the press are essential to the functioning of a democratic society, please donate today. Every dollar makes a difference. Thank you so much.

Indian Supreme Court Deals Landmark Victory to Privacy Activists

HeadlineAug 24, 2017

The Indian Supreme Court has ruled in a landmark case that individual privacy is a fundamental right under the Constitution—a ruling that could threaten the future of the world’s largest biometric identification program. The case was over whether mandatory use of the national identity cards violated individuals’ privacy rights. The ID cards began as a voluntary program but then became required to receive social services, to open a bank account, to receive college scholarships and to access other government programs. The cards collect a slew of personal information and data. Activists say the Supreme Court ruling is a major victory for privacy rights in India.
