Hi there,

The job of a journalist is to go to where the silence is — especially when those in power seek to silence voices that question or challenge power. That is what we do at Democracy Now! day in and day out, and we're able to do it because of financial support from people like you — people who trust and depend on our independent reporting. If you believe that freedom of speech and freedom of the press are essential to the functioning of a democratic society, please donate today. Every dollar makes a difference. Thank you so much.

Pope Francis Wraps Up First-Ever Papal Tour of Iraq

HeadlineMar 08, 2021

Pope Francis concluded a historic three-day tour of Iraq, becoming the first leader of the Roman Catholic Church to visit the country. His trip, which came amid ongoing violence and the pandemic, included stops in Mosul and other areas decimated by Islamic State fighters. Pope Francis capped off his visit Sunday with a Mass in Kurdistan’s capital Erbil.

Pope Francis: “I pray that the members of the various religious communities, together with all men and women of goodwill, may work together to forge bonds of fraternity and solidarity in the service of the common good and of peace. Salam, salam, salam.”
