Alexei Navalny Transferred to Hospital as Health Deteriorates

HeadlineApr 19, 2021

Russian prison officials transferred opposition leader and nationalist politician Alexei Navalny to a hospital, three weeks after he began a hunger strike to protest a lack of medical care while in prison. His doctor says his kidneys are deteriorating and he’s at high risk of cardiac arrest. Navalny is serving a three-and-a-half-year sentence over what his supporters say are trumped-up charges. Over the weekend, U.S. national security adviser Jake Sullivan warned Russia over Navalny’s treatment, saying there would be “consequences” if Navalny dies.
