Hi there,

The job of a journalist is to go to where the silence is — especially when those in power seek to silence voices that question or challenge power. That is what we do at Democracy Now! day in and day out, and we're able to do it because of financial support from people like you — people who trust and depend on our independent reporting. If you believe that freedom of speech and freedom of the press are essential to the functioning of a democratic society, please donate today. Every dollar makes a difference. Thank you so much.

Amnesty Says EU Countries Complicit in Torture

HeadlineJun 16, 2006

In Brussels, protesters with Amnesty International gathered outside a meeting of European leaders to demonstrate against what they called European complicity in CIA backed torture. A recent Council of Europe report concluded that 14 European countries have been involved in or complicit in secret CIA operations since the Sept. 11th attacks.

  • Amnesty International’s Dick Oosting: “We have indicated seven European countries that have been involved in this, four of them are members of European Union. That is Italy, it’s Germany, it’s United Kingdom and it’s Sweden. Turkey, Macedonia, Bosnia have also been implicated. So these governments must do a proper investigation. They have refused to do that so far. These governements must take measures so that foreign intelligence agencies like the CIA can no longer operate with impunity on their territory.”
