Hi there,

The job of a journalist is to go to where the silence is — especially when those in power seek to silence voices that question or challenge power. That is what we do at Democracy Now! day in and day out, and we're able to do it because of financial support from people like you — people who trust and depend on our independent reporting. If you believe that freedom of speech and freedom of the press are essential to the functioning of a democratic society, please donate today. Thanks to a group of generous donors, all donations made today will be DOUBLED, which means your $15 gift is worth $30. Every dollar makes a difference. Thank you so much.

Brazil: Son of President Bolsonaro Linked to Criminal Syndicate

HeadlineJan 24, 2019

In Brazil, the family of newly inaugurated far-right President Jair Bolsonaro is facing a growing scandal after Brazil’s biggest newspaper linked Bolsonaro’s son Flávio to members of a notorious criminal syndicate and militia known as The Crime Bureau. According to the paper O Globo, Flávio Bolsonaro has long-standing ties to a pair of Rio de Janeiro police officers now working for The Crime Bureau. Flávio Bolsonaro even employed the wife and mother of one of the former officers as recently as last year. The pair have been named suspects in the assassination of prominent human rights and gay rights activist and city councilmember Marielle Franco, who was shot dead along with her driver in Rio de Janeiro in March.
