Supreme Court to Weigh Judicial Authority over Gitmo Releases

HeadlineOct 21, 2009

The Senate vote comes as the Supreme Court has agreed to rule on whether federal judges can authorize the release of Guantanamo Bay prisoners into the United States. The move comes in the case of thirteen Muslim Uyghurs from western China who remain jailed at Guantanamo despite the government’s own determination they pose no national security threat. A judge ordered the Uyghurs’ release into the US last year, but a federal appeals court later reversed that ruling.
